We are very fortunate to have so many talented and giving individuals connected to PCL. Our Community is rich with impressive gifts and talents. I will share with you the stories of Paul B. and Doug O and their gifts to the community. As well,we have fantastic news that Paul’s story was chosen to be part of the CTV television commercials for the month of April 2016 for the annual Pledge to End Bullying Campaign. He will also be featured in radio spot ads on Kool FM and KFun.
Gift to the Community – Parents for Community Living
Paul has a great sense of humour, strong convictions of right and wrong, knows what is appropriate out in the community, travels around Kitchener and Waterloo by bus on his own, likes a good adventure, and most of all, loves to help.
Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, Paul catches the bus to the House of Friendship Food Hamper Program in Kitchener. While there, Paul weighs and bags potatoes for people who need to rely on the Food Hamper to eat. Paul is very proud and happy to be able to assist in this service to the community and has been a part of this program since July 1996. Paul looks forward to attending the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner/Evening that the Food Hamper puts on every year as he has made many friends in his time there.
Paul is also involved as a volunteer at the Waterloo Adult Recreation Center in downtown Waterloo. Since October, 2005, Paul has taken the bus there on Friday mornings to help set the tables for the senior’s lunch crowd, then has a free lunch for his efforts. Paul is the darling of the ladies of the kitchen staff, and they are very careful and creative with his gluten-free diet. Paul enjoys very much his contact with the seniors who attend lunch there on a regular basis.
For the past three years, Paul has volunteered at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, being on their schedule for collecting the offerings regularly at Saturday 5 o’clock mass and occasionally on special holidays, like Christmas and Easter. Paul takes this task very seriously as this is where he has attended church since moving to Blueridge in 1996. On occasion, when there has been a significant snowfall, Paul goes over to the church to help clear the walkways and steps for people coming to mass. He is very well liked by all his co-workers there.
Paul has been an enthusiastic participant in “Movember”, to aid in the cause of men’s health issues, each November since 2011. Paul is very proud of the mustache he grows each year as well as the money he raises for this cause.
For all these reasons, Paul B can certainly be considered to provide exceptional gifts to the community.

Paul is not our only talented member or the only one giving back to the community. Artwork that was partially created by Doug O. will be part of the “Side by Side Art Show” exhibition at THE MUSEUM, running from April 29 to May 29, 2016. All proceeds from this exhibition and sale of art items goes to Planned Lifetime Networks to help build friendship networks for people who are vulnerable and isolated. Doug has been participating in creative artwork for the past couple of years and he seems to genuinely love to create. For this show he help to create a piece called “Tranquility” Please plan on visiting the Museum to view the artwork and perhaps purchase some excellent creations.
