I have just returned from attend the annual Developmental Services Human Resources Strategy Forum. This years theme focused on building leadership for the future, which is a very timely focus in today’s economy as our leaders are aging out and thoughts should be going to who will be the leaders of the future for developmental services and how will they be different from those today. Thinking of the Core Competencies which is a part of the strategy many of the competencies play a role in shaping our future leaders, those who are strategic thinkers, good a managing resources and thinking outside the box to our communities. All of our mission statements talk about supporting a fulfilling life for individuals in the community, but what does this mean? Does it mean we continue to rely on the community to give to us OR do we need to be more thoughtful and think about what we as organizations, what the people we support can offer the community. This is where we need to focus; on building community on strengthening our ties to community and this is where our future leaders will need to focus as the transformation of developmental services continues. I was inspired by the information shared at this forum and truly believe that PCL and the people we support can give much to their communities. We will continue to develop this idea and hopefully share some success stories of those who are served within our PCL community, serve others or become more involved in making a difference in the greater community where they live, work and play.
If you are interested in looking at building communities please check out John McKnight and Paul Born on the internet, they are considered leaders in the field of building and deepening communities.
There were many other informative and educational presentations that we attended as well and i hope to be able to share and teach others some of the positive ideas that we obtained from sessions on: Behaviour Based Interviewing, Talent Management and Succession Planning, Workplace Learning and Diversity and Inclusion. In these ways we will continue to build leadership in our agency for the future.
