Positive mental health in the workplace is very important to keeping ourselves in the best possible shape to provide the best possible service and supports to the individuals supported by PCL.
Having and creating a sense of community is an important item that contributes to good mental health. One of the things that PCL has always prided it self on is its sense of community which continues to be a focus for our agency even as we grow. Our staff and homes work together on a regular basis sharing resources and expertise. They have and continue to build a network of relationships to bring people together with a sense of community. As we strive to continue our relationship building we have embarked on several activities that involve several homes and support staff working and having fun together. We have a cooking class which meets each Tuesday at the Evelyn home and an exercise group each Thursday at the CORE sports complex and birthday parties are always a good way to bring people together. AS well, we had a large group of staff and individuals supported attend Oktoberfest and of course we will be having our annual Christmas Party. This year as an extra event we are participating in the Santa Claus Parade where individuals and staff and maybe even some families will be riding or walking alongside our float.
Our employees strive very hard to provide excellent service and i wish to thank everyone for their determination and resilience through both positive and challenging times.
Another way to promote good mental health is to laugh. Humor is a good way to release tension and shake a bad mood. It can also make the workday more fun – so long as the humor is appropriate, not offensive to others and doesn’t interfere with work. Some ideas are below:
Use humor to lighten up a difficult situation
Look for opportunities to laugh with co-workers, individuals supported and families. Start a joke of the month contest. Clip and post cartoons that make you laugh.
Buy a funny card for a co-worker, individual supported or family member who might need a good laugh
Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.
