I hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend and took some time to remember what we are thankful for. Here at Parents for Community Living, we are thankful for such a caring, dedicated and innovative staff team. Our strong and creative staff have been able to put together some amazing and fun activities and supports for those we serve and those in crisis. We have a thriving day activity program operating out of the Core Sports and Recreation Complex two afternoons as week as well as a partnership with Sunbeam to use their pool on Mondays and with Playsense in Guelph to access their Snoozelin Room on Fridays.
Many of the individuals we support in our homes as well as individuals living with their families are participating in these exciting and stimulating programs. Our staff have also been busy organizing some fun events for the fall season, so far we have enjoyed an evening at the Grand River Raceway and a night out at Oktoberfest and Stanwood team is busily planning a Halloween Party. Our annual PCL Christmas party will be December 9th at St. Francis Church, flyers and information will be out soon.
As an agency we are working in collaboration with parallel agencies in the region to participate in the 2014 Anti-Bullying Campaign. We have also implemented an internal United Way Campaign this year to support the United Way as they provide us with funds on an annual basis. We have been working together with one of our committee members to submit a grant application to the city of Waterloo for funds to run what we are calling “Project Green Thumb”. This will be a seasonal outdoor maintenance and gardening volunteer based program to assist us in keeping the landscaping of our Waterloo homes beautiful. If successful we will look to try something similar with the City of Kitchener in the following year.
We continue to focus on the Core Competencies and have created a PCL 2015 Calendar in which each home has created a poster that represents a certain competency. These are available for sale as a fundraiser for PCL so please contact me if you are interested. There have been several staff training opportunities as well, including First Aid and CPR, CPI and Introduction to Core Competencies and we look forward to offering more both externally and internally.
Congratulations to Jennifer S. on 15 years of service with PCL.
