The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra

This quote by Jimmy Johnson sums up what the Core Competencies are helping all of our staff to learn and appreciate, by taking the initiative and going the extra mile ordinary supports and services become extraordinary.  PCL is fortunate to have so many staff that go the extra mile every day whether it means planning a special trip for the summer or ensuring that a person gets to see their family and friends or staying late to help out when others are sick.  Every day, PCL staff, students and volunteers spend time with those we support engaging in meaningful activiites.  We use the Core Competencies to help us understand and value these contributions and really make a difference every day.  During the months of February and March, PCL staff have been participating in a challenge loosely based on the “Hunger Games” where we have tributes and sponsors from each home completing challenges that represent showing resilience and holding people accountable. Resilience is so important in our work because it helps us to maintain stamina under continuing stress and to act effectively under pressure.  Resilient people bounce back from disappointment and don’t let them negatively affect performance.  We see this every day with the staff and people we support through some challenging situations and they continue to provide excellent service even when things don’t always go as planned. Holding people accountable is also so important for those working at PCL especially in a team environment if we all communicate exactly what we need from each other then we will have high and exceptional performance from the entire team which means that those we support will receive the best possible services.

I am happy to say that the participation in our Core Competency Hunger Games challenge has been extraordinary, proving that everyone is willing to learn, share and make a difference in the lives of those we support.  Several photos have gone up on our facebook page so have a look and “like” those staff that are going the extra mile every day.  Just a couple photos here of our Monarch tribute Emily and Blueridge tribute Scott with sponsor Jennifer
